The new café operated by the Rhyschänzli restaurant in the heart of Basel was visualized by the architects Christ & Gantenbein. Their idea for a container café arose from the many ships sailing up the Rhine on a daily basis.
The café offers the opportunity to linger on the banks of the river, with food and drink prepared by the experienced Rhyschänzli staff.
To make this idea a reality we customized a 40' sea container. We added another double leaf door and a 20' "open-side" four leaf door to the container. Rock wool was fitted to provide good insulation during the summer months and the walls and ceiling were then clad with galvanised panels. To enable the café to also operate at nighttime we installed lighting over the entire length of the container.
A highlight of the opening ceremony on May 20th was the unplugged concert by Anna Martinelli. Watch video.
